JOHN BYUN - DIRECTOR
John Byun received his Bachelor’s of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of California, Irvine and his Master’s in Choral Conducting from California State University, Long Beach. He is the Director of Choral and Vocal Activities at Riverside City College, where he directs the Chamber Singers and the Vocal Jazz Ensemble. Mr. Byun is also the Artistic Director of the Temecula Valley Master Chorale. He has been the guest conductor for several district honor choirs, the SCVA Men’s Honor Choir, the Central California Women’s Honor Choir, and the Texas Honor Choir Region 9. Before coming to RCC, he was the director of choirs at Murrieta Valley High School for ten years, and in 2004 the MVHS Chamber Singers were selected to perform at the American Choral Directors Association Western Division Conference. The RCC Chamber Singers have also performed at the ACDA Western Division Conference and the 2011 National Conference in Chicago. They have traveled to Wales where they competed in the Eisteddfod Choral Competition and took first in the Mixed Choir Division, and this year they were selected to perform at the National Collegiate Choral Organization National Conference in Colorado. They often have opportunities to perform with special guest artists such as Don Shelton (member of the Hi-Lo’s), Grammy Award Winner Jon Secada and as part of the chorus for Star Wars in Concert. Mr. Byun has performed with the Orange County Pacific Chorale as one of the bass contract singers, and he has worked with the Opera Pacific Chorus and Long Beach Opera Chorus. Mr. Byun recently launched the John Byun Choral Series with Pavane Publishing, featuring O vos omnes by Richard Burchard and O, Nata Lux, Light Born of Light by Kevin Memley. He lives locally, with his wife and two children.
